The Swing Ninjas

5pm, 4th July 2014 – Watch This Space, St Johns Church

Every song was, or could have been, off that 1980s Joe Jackson Jumpin Jive long player. Brilliant. Nice blokes, nice jokes, nice tunes. They even did the best Frankenstein movie song ever.  Some couples jive danced stage left. Which to be honest looked even more un-fun than usual being on sloping grass and in office clothes. But never mind. This was foot tapping New Orleans jazz stuff. The band performed it very well indeed. If I was to die and have a New Orleans style funeral this band would definitely be in the running for the gig.

The show was stolen by an impromptu lone dancer dancing inches from the stage. He was a zero inhibitions type of dancer and we loved him for it. His hip wiggling mincing was incongruous to his England kit and shaved head. He had a variety of moves and shapes that entranced us sinking ever deeper into our deck chairs. He taunted us with his smiles. All the world should dance like this middle aged fella. He made himself beautiful, comic and humble with out a word. He made us cringe and made us laugh. He made us reflect. He was free. We were not. He danced in the sun. We did not. We all wanted to be him. At least I did.

I was unexpectedly moved. Great fun. I’ll be back. Maybe with an ice bucket selling ice cream and cold beers.
